Letter from the Chair . . . John Jepson

Summer is just around the corner and with it comes vacations, barbecues, long days and family fun. Summer is also the time we usually take a break from SPE activities, but not this year. This summer we are planning two field trips for July and August. Please take a look at the notices on the inside for more details.

Our July trip to the Urban Oil Fields of Los Angeles will visit the location of the first well in the Los Angeles City Oil Field. The well was hand dug by Edward Doheny and Charles Canfield in 1892. Their well led to the first Los Angeles oil boom and Doheny went on to become one of the wealthiest and most controversial men of the early twentieth century. His influence with government in the 1920’s was responsible for the Teapot Dome scandal. The trip will also visit the San Vicente and Packard Drill Sites operated by Stocker Resources. I highly recommend the visit to these two sites to see how modern drilling operations take place in an urban environment. This trip is open to engineers, geologists and science teachers. Cost for this trip will be $60

Text Box: Schedule of Events

June 8 SPE Charity Golf Classic

June 12 Petroleum Technology Forum
Frank Komin, President of THUMS Long Beach Co.
Board of Directors Meeting

June 20&21	PTTC Monterey Seminar

July 26	Field Trip to the Urban Oil Fields of Downtown Los Angeles

September 11 Petroleum Technology Forum
Our August field trip will visit the facilities of Edison ESI in Westminster. This is a facility that builds and maintains a wide variety of electrical equipment from 250-ton turbines to electrical transformers. Edison always puts on a first class event and a barbecue lunch will be provided. There is no cost for this trip.

One thing we are not looking forward to this summer are the warm temperatures, power disruptions and blackouts. How will your company cope? Are there any strategies other companies are using which could benefit you? Will

power disruptions change the need for contract services and oil field equipment?

Come to the next Petroleum Technology Forum on June 12 at the Long Beach Petroleum Club and find out how THUMS Long Beach Co. is planning to deal with the changing power situation. Details on Page 3.

A sad note that I must report to you this month is of the

passing of our Honorary Chairman, Dr. Bruce Davis on May 23. Many of you know Bruce, as he was an adjunct professor at USC and a 28-year veteran of Chevron Petroleum Technology Co. in La Habra.

Bruce had been selected to be the section chairperson this year, prior to the discovery of his illness last July. During his memorial service several friends mentioned that he was a chemist to the end, that he strived to understand the complex chemistry of his disease and the chemotherapy treatment. He called his cancer treatments “Bruce’s Last Experiment”.

Dr. Bruce Davis’ contributions to the petroleum

engineering profession and to the section will be greatly missed.

Bruce was always fond of saying, “Cheers”. Let’s take this to heart and we’ll see you at the forum meeting on the June 12th.
